Town Hall
Marbella's Town Hall is located in the Old Town region of this picturesque Spanish city. The building's roots may be traced all the way back to the 1500s.
Learn the History of Marbella's Town Hall
Marbella's history took a dramatic turn in 1485. In the years preceding, the town had been occupied by the Moors. King Ferdinand III and his armies descended in 1485, placing the town under Spanish rule. The former Arab district was torn down to make way for architecture that was more in keeping with the dictates of Spanish design.
A new square was built, which came to be known as Orange Square. This scenic pocket of Marbella life had at its center a large sandstone fountain. It also featured buildings like the City Council, the Chapel of St. James and the Town Hall. All of these buildings are still in existence today.
Marbella's Town Hall is rich with history; it bears a centuries-old sun dial, along with various shields and a host of commemorative stone inscriptions that have been perfectly preserved throughout the years. Inside are the original Council Chambers, which have been split to cover two floors. Numerous points of interest await on the upper floor, such as a lavish, artistic ceiling decorated in Mudejar style.
The Town Hall is a popular stop for those sightseeing in Orange Square. Maps to the Town Hall and other Marbella attractions may be purchased from the city's Tourist Center.
