Enjoy the Sights of Orange Square

Orange Square has long been the place where Marbella residents gathered to promenade and catch up with their neighbors. The square was constructed in 1485 at the behest of that era's Catholic leaders. Marbella was previously under Arab rule, and to make way for Orange Square, numerous Arab houses were cleared away and streets were added. This gave the district a look that was more in keeping with the prevailing Castillian aesthetic. Today, Orange Square offers lots of shops and restaurants, as well as government and religious buildings that are bona fide antiques.

You can plan your Orange Square expedition by paying a quick visit to the Tourist Office, which is located in the heart of this Marbella neighborhood. This office offers free brochures on local attractions. Maps are also available that can help you locate all of the major points of interest. Note, however, that these maps must be purchased for a small price.

Many visitors to the area enjoy gazing at the sandstone fountain that dominates Orange Square. The fountain was built in 1504. Other noteworthy structures in Orange Square include:

  • The city hall
  • The governor's house
  • The Chapel of Santiago
