Moorish Walls
Marbella's Moorish Walls were built centuries ago, when the city was under Moorish rule. They were created as a means of protecting the town from invasion.
Visit Marbella's Moorish Walls
Marbella's Moorish Walls may be found in Old Town, a section of the city that is known for its historic architecture. These walls can trace their origins all the way back to the 11th century. They were built at the orders of Abderraman III, an Arab caliph of that era. Abderraman had just squashed a rebellion led by Omar be Hafsun, his rival. The Moorish Walls were commissioned to help discourage new rebellions and to protect the town in the event of an attack from forces in Northern Africa.
The Moorish Walls are old, but the materials used to build them are older still. The walls were constructed using materials from other Marbella structures. Many of these structures dated all the way back to a time when Marbella was under Roman rule.
Visitors will be happy to note that the Moorish Walls are close to other prominent Old Town sights. The ever-popular Church of Saint Mary, for example, is just a short distance away. To schedule your walking tour of this section of town, you'll want to visit the city's Tourist Office, where useful maps of Old Town Marbella may be purchased.
