The Church of Saint Mary is dominated by a spectacular bell tower. For much of its history, this bell tower held the distinction of being the highest point in all of Marbella.

The first thing that visitors see as they approach the church is its imposing main gate. The gate is made of stone and is built according to rococo traditions. Inside, the church features basilic motifs, and three of its naves are built according to the baroque style. Note that the Church of Saint Mary's interior had to be substantially rebuilt in the wake of the Spanish Civil War, after soldiers set fire to the structure.

Holding a central role in the church's interior layout is a gigantic organ. Many experts consider this organ to be one of the most significant Spanish-built organs of the past 125 years. The main altarpiece of the Church of Saint Mary honors Marbella's patron saint, Saint Barnabe.
